The Erie County Bar Association Celebrates Law Day and 150 Years of Service
The Erie County Bar Association recently honored notable members of the legal community at its annual Law Day event held at the Warner Theatre. This year’s celebration marked a significant milestone, coinciding with the association’s 150th anniversary.
A Night of Recognition
During the event, the Bar Association presented various awards acknowledging the contributions of both legal professionals and community members. The distinguished awards included:
- Chancellor of the Bar Award: James E. Marsh Jr.
- Pro Bono Award: Rachel Loper
- Liberty Bell Award: Rev. Dr. Donald L. Baxter Jr.
Chancellor of the Bar Award: James E. Marsh Jr.
James E. Marsh Jr. received the Chancellor of the Bar Award for his significant contributions to legal practice and civic engagement. With over 53 years of experience, Marsh is a senior partner at the Erie law firm Marsh Schaaf, specializing in real estate and estate planning.
The Bar Association highlighted his “distinguished career” and noted that he previously served as president of the association in 1994. His contributions extend beyond law, as he has also served on the Fairview School Board.
Notably, Marsh is part of a legacy, with both his father and brother having received the same award in previous years.
Pro Bono Award: Rachel Loper
The Pro Bono Award was awarded to Rachel M. Loper, recognizing her dedication to providing legal services to underserved populations. As an associate attorney at MacDonald, Illig, Jones & Britton, Loper has made a meaningful impact in her short legal career, notably helping a client secure Social Security benefits during a challenging time.
The Bar Association emphasized the tangible difference her work made in the individual’s life, reflecting her commitment to service.
Liberty Bell Award: Rev. Dr. Donald L. Baxter Jr.
The Liberty Bell Award celebrated Rev. Dr. Donald L. Baxter Jr. for his community contributions that bolster the principles of freedom under law. Practicing dermatology in Erie since 1992, Baxter is also an ordained Episcopal priest.
His extensive service includes leadership roles at various nonprofit organizations and providing free medical services to the community. Baxter has been a vocal advocate for First Amendment rights and has contributed widely to community discussions on faith.
He shares a personal connection to the judiciary as the husband of U.S. District Judge Susan Paradise Baxter.
Law Day: A Celebration of Justice and Community
Designated by Congress in 1961, Law Day, celebrated on May 1, recognizes the importance of the rule of law. The Erie County Bar Association’s Law Day event not only honors legal professionals but also engages the community, with approximately 400 students participating in a program prior to the awards ceremony.
Historian Greg Jackson, known for his “History That Doesn’t Suck!” series, was the event’s highlighted speaker, further enriching the celebration.
Conclusion
The Erie County Bar Association’s recognition of its members during this milestone year underscores its long-standing commitment to both legal excellence and community service.
