Increased Police Presence at Lowcountry Beaches for Spring Break
ISLE OF PALMS, S.C. – As Spring Break approaches, law enforcement agencies are boosting their patrols along the beaches of Folly Beach and Isle of Palms.
Spring Break Schedule
Students from both the Berkeley County and Charleston County School Districts will be on Spring Break from April 14 through 18, with an additional Teacher Workday on April 21, creating an extended holiday period for many.
Law Enforcement Response
In anticipation of the large number of students taking time off, local law enforcement has announced an increased presence on the beaches. This initiative is primarily aimed at ensuring safety and preventing incidents similar to last year’s unfortunate events.
Focus Areas of Enforcement
The Isle of Palms Police Department, in collaboration with the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office, South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, and others, will be focusing on:
- Prohibiting alcohol consumption on the beach
- Traffic management including speeding and DUI enforcement
Safety Commitment
Sergeant Matt Storen, Public Information Officer for the Isle of Palms Police Department, emphasized the commitment to safety, stating that increased patrols aim to ensure a secure environment for all beachgoers. “We want everybody to come. Have a great time, enjoy our beautiful resource that is the Isle of Palms Beach, but do so safely and following the laws,” Storen said.
Lessons of the Past
Reflections on last year’s Senior Skip Day were also shared, noting that police are particularly vigilant on this day due to the tragic incident where five individuals were shot on the Isle of Palms in 2023. Law enforcement is determined to prevent such events from recurring.
“That day that the shooting took place, Chief Cornett vowed that he would make sure that that never took place again on this island. And we take that very seriously,” added Sergeant Storen.
A Message to Visitors
The Isle of Palms Police Department urges visitors to adhere to local laws during their stay. The increased law enforcement presence is not intended to deter enjoyment but to promote a fun and safe experience. “We’re not out there to write tickets and arrest people. We’re just wanting to make sure everybody has a safe and enjoyable time at the beach,” Storen reassured.
