A Somber Milestone

On April 20, 2024, Deputy Bolter was involved in a routine traffic stop when he was fatally shot. Despite best efforts, he succumbed to his injuries the following day, marking a historic first for the Ada County Sheriff’s Department as its first line-of-duty death.

Community Remembrance and Family Tribute

Reflecting on the past year, Abbey Bolter, the widow of Deputy Bolter, expressed the lingering pain of loss, stating, “It feels like yesterday still. It’s crazy, it’s been a year.” To honor her husband’s memory, she plans to bake his favorite cookies and participate in a vigil attended by members of the law enforcement community.

Mourning Bands and Memorial Events

In recognition of Deputy Bolter’s anniversary, the Ada County Sheriff’s Office announced that deputies will don mourning bands on their badges this Sunday and Monday. This gesture serves as a sign of respect for those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

“Today marks one year since Deputy Tobin Bolter was tragically shot during a traffic stop. In his memory, our deputies will wear mourning bands on their badges today and tomorrow. This black band is a solemn sign of respect and remembrance for those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty,” stated the sheriff’s office.

Additionally, deputies plan to wear these mourning bands again on May 8, as Deputy Bolter’s name will be added to the Idaho Peace Officer Memorial Wall during its annual ceremony, and on May 15 for National Peace Officer Memorial Day, honoring all fallen officers nationwide.

Deputy Bolter’s Career

Before joining the Ada County Sheriff’s Office in January 2024, Deputy Bolter served with both the Meridian Police Department and the Pleasant Hill Police Department in California. His dedication to service has left a lasting impact on his community and colleagues.
