SpiceJet Expands International Reach with New Delhi-Kathmandu Flights

New Route Announcement

Low-cost carrier SpiceJet has revealed plans to initiate daily non-stop flights connecting Delhi and Kathmandu, effective from May 10, 2025. This launch marks the airline’s first new international destination following its recent Qualified Institutional Placement (QIP).

Comments from SpiceJet Leadership

Debojo Maharshi, Chief Business Officer at SpiceJet, expressed enthusiasm about this new route, stating, “We are thrilled to introduce daily non-stop flights between Delhi and Kathmandu, one of the most sought-after routes in the region. Think ancient temples, bustling bazaars, and the gateway to eight of the world’s tallest peaks, including Everest – all just a SpiceJet flight away! And for our friends in Nepal, Delhi becomes your springboard to the world, with seamless connections to Dubai, the Middle East, and beyond!”

Maharshi further emphasized the airline’s commitment to enhancing connectivity and providing more affordable travel options as the fleet and network continue to expand, hinting at future announcements regarding additional destinations.

Growth and Fleet Expansion

The new route enhances SpiceJet’s international footprint, which already features popular destinations such as Dubai and Bangkok. Following the successful raise of ₹3,000 Crore through the QIP, the airline has significantly expanded its domestic operations, launching services to new cities including Shivamogga, Tuticorin, Porbandar, and Dehradun, in addition to reviving previous routes like Gorakhpur.

SpiceJet’s recent financial revitalization is supported by multiple credit rating upgrades from Acuité Ratings & Research Limited and CareEdge Ratings, alongside a ₹294.09 Crore investment by Promoter Ajay Singh.

Financial Stability and Future Plans

SpiceJet continues to recover financially, reporting a net worth turnaround in Q3 FY25 with a profit of ₹26 Crore, a notable improvement from the ₹300 Crore loss earlier. Revenues surged by 53% to ₹1,651 Crore. Key financial strategies included successful settlements with lessors, which saved millions while alleviating ₹160.07 Crore in provident fund dues. The airline projects an additional ₹185 Crore from upcoming Haj flights in 2025.

The airline’s ambitious plans also include a fleet restoration initiative aimed at ungrounding 30 aircraft and a target of 100 operational planes by 2026, thus improving connectivity to markets such as Jeddah and Riyadh.

Commitment to Safety

In a demonstration of its commitment to safety, SpiceJet has renewed its International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) certification. This widely recognized evaluation underscores the airline’s continuous efforts to maintain high safety standards, marking another key milestone in its turnaround strategy.
