Understanding Mental Health Struggles in the Legal Profession

Personal Reflections on Mental Health
In recent discussions with my therapist, I decided to increase my dosage of Lexapro, recognizing a resurgence of feelings akin to hopelessness. Unlike past experiences where the causes were more visible, these feelings have become elusive, surfacing intensely in the mornings before gradually diminishing. Acknowledging that these sensations might not always correlate with identifiable triggers has been a significant learning experience.
Historical Context of My Mental Health Journey
Looking back at my history with depression, the signs were evidently clearer in 2005 when self-harm statements and substance abuse were involved. However, a lesser-known episode occurred in 2010 during which, after near three years of sobriety, I faced a wave of despair. Believing I could tackle challenges without medication, I abruptly stopped my treatment, unaware of the consequences that would follow.
Catastrophic Moments
A particularly poignant moment occurred when I was listening to a radio broadcast about the Texas Rangers baseball team’s bankruptcy. My brother, Mark, was among those bidding for the team, and despite my relatively stable life—housing, food, and sobriety—I was overwhelmed by feelings of despair. This seemingly trivial event tapped into deeper feelings of worthlessness entrenched since childhood. It became clear that my struggles were not merely reactions to immediate situations but remnants of unresolved emotional trauma from my youth.
The Ongoing Journey of Healing
These experiences have taught me that triggers often emerge unexpectedly, highlighting the need for continuous mental health support. It is essential to remember that adjustments in treatment or medication are acceptable as we navigate the complexities of depression.
